The Test and Research Institute Pirmasens (PFI) is headquartered in a town that is a hub of footwear competence in south-west Germany. The PFI is a non-profit private testing, research and training centre for the leather and footwear industry, its suppliers, and for trade. PFI is part of a large network of stakeholders within the German footwear industry and a frequent participant in standardization committees.
Thanks to its intimate historical association with the footwear industry the institute enjoys a profound wealth of knowledge of the manufacturing methods, components, and materials used in that sector. Nowadays, however, the activities extend far beyond the footwear industry to cover a wide range of materials, semi-finished products, and finished products in the areas:
• Footwear, leather goods, and textiles
• Orthopaedic products and medical devices
• Personal protective equipment
• Plastics and adhesives
• Toys and sports goods
• Automotive interiors
PFIs staff consists of approximately 100 highly qualified researchers, engineers and technicians, trainers and consultants in the fields of footwear technology, physical and chemical testing, and certification.

Sedište Instituta za ispitivanje i istraživanje Pirmasens (PFI) je u gradu koji je centar kompetencija za obuću u jugozapadnoj Nemačkoj. PFI je neprofitni privatni centar za testiranje, istraživanje i obuku namjenjenu industriji kože i obuće, njenih dobavljača i trgovine. PFI je dio velike mreže zainteresovanih strana u nemačkoj industriji obuće i čest je učesnik u odborima za standardizaciju.

Zahvaljujući  istorijskoj povezanosti sa industrijom obuće, institut ima ogromno bogatstvo znanja o proizvodnim metodama, komponentama i materijalima koji se koriste u tom sektoru. Danas, međutim, aktivnosti se protežu daleko izvan industrije obuće i pokrivaju širok spektar materijala, poluproizvoda i gotovih proizvoda u oblastima:

• Obuća, kožna galanterija i tekstil

• Ortopedski proizvodi i medicinska sredstva

• Lična zaštitna oprema

• Plastika i ljepila

• Igračke i sportska oprema

• Automobilski enterijeri ...

IRCUO, as development and testing center for leather and footwear industry, was founded in 1999 as a response of Slovenian leather and footwear industry to increasing quality and innovation demands of the market. Additionally, companies needed a technological center, where they could test input materials and final products, before market introduction.

IRCUO adding value and increase competitiveness of its members, by managing the following activities:

-       Testing of input materials, footwear components and finished footwear.

-       Education - Main problem in Slovenia and wider is lack of quality education programs in textile, leather and footwear industry

-       R&D projects - Managing integrated research and development projects, co-financed by national government or European Union development funds and programs.
